Racing Queensland is aiming to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to help trainers who have been hard-hit by the recent floods.

Cyclone Debbie and its aftermath dumped a large amount of rain from north Queensland to the NSW border and many racing centres have been hit hard.

The total damage bill will be in excess of $1 million and more than 200 trainers have been affected.

The special fund is aimed at helping trainers who have additional animal welfare, care and transportation costs.

The Animal Welfare and Training Assistance Fund, for all codes, was started by RQ with an initial contribution of $20,000.

RQ's chief executive Eliot Forbes said wagering operators have also been quick to help.

"I want to thank UBET, Tabcorp, Ladbrokes, William Hill and Sportsbet for their major donations and quick support. Already we have around $120,000, a fantastic effort in just two days," Forbes said.

"The Brisbane Racing Club is going to run a charity auction on Victory Stakes day (April 29) to raise funds and we are in contact with other wagering operators."
