Guy Walter will scoot around top level races during the Sydney carnival with Phar Lap Stakes winner Toydini but is eyeing a possible Queensland Derby tilt in the winter.
Toydini ($6.50), having his second start back after being gelded, unleashed an impressive turn of foot to race away with Saturday's Group Two 1500m event by 2-1/4 lengths.
Walter believes Toydini is better suited with his races spaced and ruled out backing him up in the Group One Rosehill Guineas next week.
Instead he will target the Group Three Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) in three weeks and then the Group Three Frank Packer Plate (2000m).
"After that we'll think about a Queensland Derby start," Walter said.
"That was what we hoped for today. He showed the nice turn of foot he's always had but we just felt as a colt he wasn't quite producing his best."
Six of Toydini's previous 10 starts had been in stakes company but Saturday's win was his first at that level.
Jockey Blake Shinn has always had a big opinion of Toydini and believes the decision to geld him will be repaid in the three-year-old's racetrack performances.
"He's shown so much potential," Shinn said.
"The owners took a bit of persuading to geld him but now they've got a really promising racehorse. I'm sure he's going to go to really big heights."
Ninth Legion ($5), who sat close to the speed behind leader Indianapolis, battled on well for second a length ahead of third-placed Force Command ($12).
Toydini is by Bernardini out of the former talented mare Johan's Toy who was also trained by Walter.
