A winning double, an unlucky defeat and a late scratching summed up an eventful day for trainer Kelly Schweida at Doomben.
Schweida's fortunes were on the rise after wins by Agitate in the Mark Timms Handicap (1110m) and Epic in the Francie Vincent Handicap (1600m) early in the meeting.
But events quickly turned sour for Schweida when Discreet finished a desperately unlucky third in the Russ Daniels Plate (1350m) and Rocker was a late scratching.
Stewards ordered Rocker to barrier trial before he has his next run after the stallion became agitated in the gates shortly before the start of the Alf Said Handicap (1110m).
Jockey Glen Colless was thrown from Rocker and will require X-rays to determine whether he has a broken right foot.
Schweida openly declared Epic in the "good thing" category before the race and his judgement proved spot on when the gelding scored impressively after an aggressive ride from Michael Cahill.
"I don't think I've gone to a race meeting in years as confident about winning a race as I was with that horse today," Schweida said.
"His run last start was good because I don't think he liked the soft going and this was the perfect race for him."
Schweida and Cahill devised a plan to ride Epic close to the speed despite a wide alley.
"I didn't want him getting too far back because there didn't look much pace in the race and going forward was the right decision," he said.
Epic's career was in jeopardy when he suffered a bowed tendon nearly two years ago but Schweida never lost faith in the son of Stratum.
"He needed 12 months in the paddock but the time off did him the world and he's racing as well as he ever has," he said.
Cahill chalked up his 59th winner for the season aboard Epic and is on target to win his first Brisbane jockeys' premiership.
