Bianmick behaves more like a cheeky house guest than a thoroughbred racehorse. Until he arrives at the track.

Through the week the six-year-old kicks back with cows, dogs and a goat - and waits for his evening treat from trainer Michael Brady's partner Linda.

His laidback attitude vanishes on raceday however, when he is transformed into a ferociously competitive runner.

The six-year-old's unlikely rise to fame, which continues when he tackles the Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) at Caulfield on Saturday, began when he scored his maiden win at Sale in July, 2010.

Bianmick went on to stun Brady as he continued to collect victories, nine to date, culminating in his Group Three JRA Cup win at Moonee Valley two weeks ago when he strolled home by two lengths.

Brady, who trains just the one horse at his property at Ripplebrook, near Drouin in Victoria's Gippsland area, said he first saw his gelding's potential late last year.

"I tried him last season and he ran a couple of nice races at Sandown over 1800 metres and two at Moonee Valley over the 2040 metres," he said.

"He seemed to be finishing off so I thought I might try him as a stayer.

"He's very clean-winded and his joints are pretty good.

"He's had niggling injuries but we've put a lot of time into him and he just seems to be thriving now."

No-one, least of all Brady, expected Bianmick to become a consistently stellar performer, but he said when his charge was on show he became a star.

"He's enjoying the spotlight, I can't believe it," he said.

"Since June he's only finished out of the placings twice and his two fourths have been terrific runs.

"He's so competitive. I think when he won his first city race at Sandown he got headed by a length-and-a-half and he just fought back.

"He's tenacious, he was saying `nothing's going to beat me'."

Back on the farm, Bianmick returns to his relaxed persona, adopting the role of watcher and watchdog.

"His personality just intrigues me. He is so intelligent although we've always had to do everything right.

"Then he does these little things that annoy you, like he head-butts you.

"I just watch him and he's watching me all the time.

"And I could tell if someone's been to our place - because he tells you."

Brady says Bianmick will be competitive at Caulfield on Saturday. He has him entered for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups and will "just take what comes along".

"It's all about the horse. If he enjoys it and he's going well, so be it, because I just want to look after him," Brady said.

But, as far as he is concerned, the fairytale has already happened.
