First-up expectations are being kept in check ahead of stakes winner Amaethon's return from injury at Caulfield but co-trainer Mat Ellerton is just happy to have the sprinter back.

The gelding bowed a tendon after a first-up win at Caulfield in March last year and has been off the scene for 12 months.

"We were looking at the Goodwood with him last year so it was a shame because he was just hitting his straps," Ellerton said.

Amaethon resumes in the Bert Bryant Handicap (1000m) on Saturday with 60.5kg and the outside draw.

"He's going well but he's still a bit big in condition having had a year off," Ellerton said.

"I just hope he gets through the run in one piece. I imagine he'll need the run."

Amaethon, winner of five of his 25 starts including the Listed Testa Rossa Stakes in 2011, had stem-cell surgery to repair the tendon injury.

"On his day he's a pretty smart horse so hopefully we can get him back to somewhere near his best," Ellerton said.

Amaethon's half-brother Crystal Web is also entered for a 1400m race but Ellerton lamented a wide draw.

"He's a doubtful runner I think," Ellerton said.

"He just can't draw a barrier."
