Lights Of Heaven has given trainer Peter Moody a welcome change of luck in Sydney with victory in the Group Three Neville Sellwood Stakes, the first race on Saturday's Golden Slipper program.
The mare was the well supported $2.90 favourite on a Rosehill track rated in the slow range as she kept in touch with leader Why Not in the run.
Luke Nolen took Lights Of Heaven to the front halfway down the straight and kept her going to the line, 1-3/4 lengths ahead of Hoylonny ($4.60) with Said Com ($13) another half length away.
"It's been a bleak couple of weeks," Moody said.
"But she had a fair bit on those."
The winner of the Group One Schweppes Oaks in 2011, Lights Of Heaven was the early favourite for that year's Caulfield and Melbourne Cup.
She finished third at Caulfield and was unplaced at Flemington. Her best Group One performance since was her second to Mawingo in last year's Doomben Cup before she won the Group Two Brisbane Cup.
"She will go to the Queen Elizabeth Stakes then the Hollindale Stakes and Doomben Cup - the same path as last year," Moody said.
Nolen said the race panned out as he had hoped.
"It all went to plan," he said.
"The race was in our grasp a long way out and she found the line strongly."
Lights Of Heaven gave 4kg to all her other rivals but Chris Waller, trainer of the two placegetters, said she was well in at the handicaps.
"The winner was very well weighted," he said.
"Our horses both ran well and will go to Randwick in two weeks for the 2000-metre race (JRA Plate)."
A third Waller stablemate, Lunayir ($6.50) didn't handle the wet conditions and finished eighth of the nine runners.
