Stakes race win for Hell Or Highwater

Saturday 2 September 2017, 5:30pm

Hell Or Highwater has completed a winning hat-trick but more importantly collected a stakes race victory at Caulfield.

The Lindsay Park-trained five-year-old was successful at Flemington and Caulfield before Saturday's win in the Listed Heatherlie Stakes over 1700m.

Ridden by Dean Yendall, Hell Or Highwater started the $4.80 favourite in defeating Guardini ($26) by 1-1/2 lengths with Amelie's Star ($9) a head away third.

"It was so important for her to win a black type race," senior Lindsay Park trainer David Hayes said.

"A fantastic group of guys own her and she's a very valuable broodmare now.

"She's raced well all winter and she's now got to keep racing well through the spring as there's some nice races that will suit."

Hayes pointed to the Group Two Matriarch Stakes (2000m) at Flemington in November but he was leaving his options open.

Even the Group One Toorak Handicap at Caulfield next month could be a possibility.

"There are plenty of options," he said.

"The Toorak is one, the Stocks Stakes at Moonee Valley and even the Coongy Cup are worth thinking about."

Hell Or Highwater was one of four runners the Lindsay Park stable saddled up.

Harlem ($8.50) finished fifth with Ventura Storm ($9) a closing seventh and Fanatic ($81) in 12th place.

"I thought Harlem and Ventura Storm were excellent," Hayes said.

"Harlem got held up early in the straight and Ventura Storm was getting home strongly.

"Fanatic needs a mile-and-a-half before we see the best of her."
