Lady Melksham still won't be at her peak on Saturday but trainer John Sadler doesn't think the mare needs to be to continue her Group One preparations with another victory.
Sadler is aiming Lady Melksham at the Group One Robert Sangster Stakes in Adelaide later this month and the four-year-old has her final start ahead of that mission in the Yarraville Handicap (1000m) at Flemington.
"She hasn't gone backwards since her first-up win but she's certainly been trained for the Sangster," Sadler said.
"I haven't screwed her down at all yet. She wasn't 100 per cent ready first-up and she's not 100 per cent for Saturday. But she doesn't need to be to win these shorter races."
Glen Boss is staying in Melbourne on Saturday and continues his association with Lady Melksham who won a 955m race first-up at Moonee Valley.
Sadler can't fault how Lady Melksham is progressing but also hopes the weather can play its part when it comes to the Adelaide race.
"She's a good-class mare as her form will tell you," Sadler said of the winner of five of her eight starts.
"But she's probably even better on rain-affected ground. She's a very good wet tracker and that would help her in a big race."
Imported stablemate Energia Elegante could also find herself in Adelaide depending on how she runs in the Community Raceday Handicap (1400m) at Flemington.
Three-year-old Energia Elegante won three of her four starts in Brazil, including a Group Two, and finished fifth of eight in her first start in Melbourne at Moonee Valley over 1600m last month.
Sadler expects the filly to need another run to find her best but will be guided by her progress to determine where to head next.
"We'll see whether she's going to stay and if she is then maybe she'll go to Adelaide for one of the Oaks races there," he said.
