Memento out to win maiden at Warwick Farm

Tuesday 19 September 2017, 1:35pm

Already a Group placegetter, Memento will continue her quest for an elusive maiden victory at Warwick Farm for the father-and-son training partnership Anthony and Edward Cummings.

The three-year-old filly will attempt to improve on a trio of minor placings at her seventh start on Wednesday when she lines up in the TAB.com.au Plate (1100m).

Although Memento ran third in the Group Three Magic Night Stakes (1200m) in March, Edward Cummings is keen for her to convert that promise into her first win.

Memento comes to the race after a first-up fifth in a Benchmark 71 Handicap at Warwick Farm on September 6 and Cummings is confident she will be able to challenge $2.70 pre-race favourite Nai'a.

"I think she's arguably the best credentialled horse in the race with her stakes placing against two very good horses," Cummings said.

Tulip, who went on to run third in the Golden Slipper, won the Magic Night Stakes while runner-up Alizee won the Group Two Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on Saturday.

He said Memento deserved a win.

"I'd just sorely love to win a race with her. The owners have been incredibly patient," he said.

"She's not a frustrating horse to deal with. We just haven't had the results we thought we were entitled to.

"We thought she was a really good chance on debut and she ran a really gutsy second after bungling the start."

Memento has also bungled the start on two other occasions but Cummings said that was no longer an issue.

"We're in a position now where we just want to try and win a race, get that maiden tag lifted off shoulders and move on from there," he said.

The stable also has November Man and Ten Carat chasing victory in a Maiden Plate (1100m) for colts and geldings.
