Trainers warned of cobalt levels in feed

Tuesday 19 September 2017, 4:43pm

Trainers have been warned some commercially available feeds have been found to contain levels of cobalt well above that specified on the labels.

Racing NSW stewards said in particular two batches of Barastoc Phar Lap Oats-Free Muesli Concentrated Feed manufactured on March 23 and May 22 this year had been analysed and found to contain levels of cobalt excessively above the disclosed analysis on the product label.

Stewards said trainers should satisfy themselves as to the level of cobalt contained in the product before using it.

They also said trainers should be careful when ordering custom-made horse feeds, feed additives, and/or supplements as some manufacturers are not listing all the active constituents, and/or the concentration of all active constituents on the labels.

At the same time, they reminded trainers of their obligations to know what they are feeding, and/or administering to, their horses, including the concentrations of active constituents of any products they use.

If they are not aware of the active constituents of any products they are advised to take steps to fnd out.
