John Thompson trio step up in Gloaming

Friday 22 September 2017, 3:54pm

John Thompson is looking to Thy Kingdom Come to spearhead a three-pronged assault on the Gloaming Stakes at Rosehill to justify a start in the Group One Spring Champion Stakes.

The Randwick trainer puts the colt's form above stablemates All Day and Badge of Gameness as he completes preparations for the Group Three Gloaming Stakes on Saturday.

Thy Kingdom Come is backing up from his maiden at Kembla Grange earlier this month when he blitzed the field by six lengths over 1600 metres.

"His last win was impressive. He's beaten a sub-standard field but he beat them very easy," Thompson said.

"He's always shown that he's got good ability. Once he stepped up to these sorts of distances he's come into his own.

"It was good to see him do what he did over a mile last start and you'd think up to the 1800 he should go better again."

However, Thompson admitted the step up in class was significant, with Godolphin's Astoria and Sanctioned in the race.

Astoria was third when Thy Kingdom Come tailed the field in the Group Three Ming Dynasty (1400m) last month.

Thompson said the Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on October 7 was the goal for Thy Kingdom Come.

All Day ($26), who won his maiden at Wyong last month, and Badge Of Gameness ($34), a last-start winner at Gosford, are making their Saturday Sydney debuts.

"Both horses have been looking for the distance. We'll see how they measure up. It's the time of year where three-year-olds can jump out of the ground," he said.
