Pedigree Points for this Saturday’s Breeders’ Plate…

The Breeders’ Plate has been a great guide to future Golden Slipper winners – in recent years it’s thrown up Sebring, Pierro, Vancouver and Capitalist.

The race is well named – not only does it enhance the reputation of a winner’s sire – but also the future stud prospects of the winner as well. Other successful sires that have won the race are Snitzel, Choisir, Charge Forward, Clang, Real Saga, Luskin Star and more recently Smart Missile.

Eight of the 13 runners in 2017 are by I Am Invincible (3), Exceed and Excel (3) and Not a Single Doubt (2), while Exceed and Excel gets another tick through grand-son Exceltic by Excelebration. 

1. Bondi (SNITZEL x Bondi Blonde [RED RANSOM])

*A $400,000 yearling offered by Strawberry Hill at MM – purchased by China Horse Club/Newgate Farm

*1/2 brother Distroyia (SEPOY) has won twice (1300m, 1600m), while Miss Saks a filly by MANHATTAN RAIN is also a winner (1400m)

*Dam Bondi Blonde is part of the Strawberry Hill broodmare band, she produced a SNITZEL colt last season and has another foal by SNITZEL due this season

*2nd dam Strawberry Girl was an American bred daughter of W.S. Cox Plate winner STRAWBERRY ROAD, she was stakes placed and produced four stakes winners: STRAWBERRY BOY, DANROAD, NEWTOWN JET and TIPPITAKA, a full sister to Bondi Blonde

2. Exceltic (EXCELEBRATION x Offshore Sam [SHAMARDAL (USA)])

*Has won a barrier trial for Gary Portelli

*Was a $120,000 buy for Laurel Oak Bloodstock at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale, offered by Willaroon Thoroughbreds

*Dam is a 1/2 sister to stakes placed Liberty Rock, also in the family are stakes winners KALAMATA, STIRLING GROVE, KIRVINSKY & HUCKLEBUCK

*Dam produced a HELMET colt last season and is due to foal this season having been covered by Melbourne Cup winner FIORENTE

*EXCELEBRATION has sired two stakes winners to date both in Australian and Great Britain

*Dam, a winner over 7 furlongs in the USA was imported in August 2004

*Arctic Drift is the dam of 9 named foals, 8 to race for 6 winners, she had a 2016 filly by HELMET but slipped to EXOSPHERE last season

*2nd dam NOVEMBER SNOW  was Joint top filly on The 1992 USA 3yo Free H. with 2 Grade 1 wins plus four other stakes victories

4. Osorno (EXCEED AND EXCEL x Antillanca [STREET CRY (IRE)])

*Godolphin bred

*First foal for his unraced dam Antillanca, who has since produced a colt by MEDAGLIA D’ORO before being covered by EXCEED AND EXCEL last season

*Antillanca is a 1/2 sister to G2 Surround Stakes winner GHISONI (LONHRO)

*Sold for $240,000 at the MM Sale for Mark Newnham – vendor was Rosari Farm (Warwick, QLD)

*Dam was a 2x winner and is a 1/2 sister to ANATINA , PRICKED – ALBATROSS (H.K.)

*Quack It has since foaled an I AM INVINCIBLE filly but has missed to WANDJINA

*2nd dam is Quack and 3rd dam is MOTHER DUCK – a Gimcrack winner among others

7. Santos (I AM INVINCIBLE x Ghaliah  [SECRET SAVINGS])

*Sold by Emirates Park at the 2017 Inglis Classic Sale to Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott for $180,000

*Ghaliah died in October 2016 at the age of 15, just a few days after foaling a filly by SMART MISSILE, Santos is her second last foal from 9 overall

*Dam is a 1/2 sister Silver Shadow and MVRC Champagne Stakes winner ADEEWIN (SNAADEE), FATTOON (dam of FAT AL), MUTAWAAJID and JIVAGO

8. Invincible Lad (I AM INVINCIBLE x MAGDALENA [SNAADEE (USA)])

*An $80,000 buy for Triple Crown Syndications at the Inglis Classic Sale – was offered by Yarraman Park Stud and was the first lot through the ring in the Gold Riband session

*Invincible Lad is a full brother to Gimcrack runner up Tetsuko, and a 1/2 to Star Kat – Cheerful Master (H.K.) and Purrpurrlena, in turn the dam of Champion South African filly ENTISAAR, winner of the G1 Allan Robertson Championship

*MAGDALENA was a LR winner in WA – she died in April 2016 at the age of 22, Invincible Lad is her last foal, she produced 10 overall – 9 to race for 8 winners so far

*Bought for $460,000 at MM for Hawkes Racing – from the draft of Vinery Stud

*1/2 brother to VERY TEMPTING – a winner of the G3 Western Australian Oaks and runner-up in the WA Derby

*Fit And Ready was a winner at 1100m, she’s a 1/2 sister to Golden Slipper winner CATBIRD, DANBIRD and Coat – the dam of PILLAR OF HERCULES

*2nd dam FITTING (MARSCAY) was a winner of the LR Gimcrack Stakes – and placed in a Black Opal, Flight Stakes & Silver Slipper, as well as running 4th in a Golden Slipper

*Dam was a LR winner in SA and ran 3rd in G1 Blue Diamond, she’s had two named foals, with one to race, she wasn’t served last season

*2nd dam Brave and Bold is a 3/4 sister to TIMBOURINA and a 1/2 to BRAVE PRINCE, VALOURINA (dam of MEDIA & CARDINAL VIRTUE)
