Fashion, horses and footy at Randwick

Friday 29 September 2017, 5:24am

Fashion, fun, sport and entertainment will kick off one of the biggest events of the spring racing carnival in Sydney.

Three Group One races are among nine programmed for Epsom Day at Randwick on Saturday where retiring NRL players will also talk about their sport's grand final the following day.

Former NRL greats Nathan Hindmarsh and Petero Civoniceva will be among those on stage in the Oaks Lawn Trackside Marquee as their partners mingle among the audience wearing the latest in race fashion.

Embellished headbands, fascinators, straw hats, feathered haloes, and fancy turbans have all been seen so far this spring in Sydney.

Floaty and even more structured dresses in block colours or patterned in flowers with the colours of reds, blues, emerald greens and more pastel yellows and pinks have all made their presence.

For the men, dark coloured suits with interesting ties or bows to match their outfits or the official race day colour are in vogue.

Trainer Bjorn Baker will also be in the Oaks Lawn Marquee to provide insights into the day's races as his horse Champagne Cuddles competes in the Group One Flight Stakes at 2.40pm.

Trainers, owners, jockeys and punters will eagerly watch the main race at 4pm when Happy Clapper is the favourite to win his first Group One race after four minor placings.

AFL fans will be catered for with a large screen playing the grand final match live from Melbourne's MCG.

A cloudy day is forecast in Sydney on Saturday with a top of 23 degrees.

12:20 - Arrowfield Breeders' Plate 1000m
