Guiliano blooms in Queensland

Former Sydney stayer My Giuliano is typical of how trainer Chris Waller's team is starting to bloom in Queensland.

My Giuliano was a controversial nose second to Ingeegoodbee over 2200m at Doomben two weeks ago when his jockey Brad Stewart entered an unusual protest.

Stewart complained Ron Stewart on Ingeegoodbee had used the whip to excess before the 100m breaking the rules.

Stewards agreed Stewart had used the whip more than allowed but dismissed the protest because they could not be satisfied it altered the result.

My Giuliano gets a chance to avenge that defeat in the Benchmark 80 Handicap (2200m) at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday.

Waller opened a Gold Coast stable in early August and after a frustrating run of minor placings he had a two-centre treble last Saturday.

Silverwin won at the Gold Coast while Colosimo and Loving Home beat stablemate Vassal at Ipswich.

Waller has deliberately targeted staying races in Queensland and is confident My Guiliano can provide him with another win.

Stable foreman Paul Shailer said Waller's team was starting to come good after they had found the recipe for training horses in Queensland.

"It took us a while to work it out," Shailer said.

"For instance you have to feed the horses differently. They need less in the warmer weather.

"The horses are really thriving after ten to 12 days. My Giuliano is a case in point as he has come ahead in leaps and bound since his last run."
