Gai Waterhouse licensed to train jumpers

Wednesday 10 April 2013, 5:44pm

Gai Waterhouse has passed a test to train jumpers, something that proved much easier than her original battle to gain a licence.

The seven-time Sydney premiership winner had to fight her case for many years until she was granted a licence to train in 1992.

She was denied because she was married to warned-off bookmaker Robbie Waterhouse and her case forced changes to the NSW Sex Discrimination Act.

With no jumps racing in NSW, Waterhouse and her horse The Nemesis were given the once over by Victoria's visiting deputy chief steward Rob Montgomery at Randwick on Wednesday morning.

"Both the horse and trainer passed the test with flying colours," Waterhouse said.

"It was much easier to get this licence.

"The horse had to go over the jumps and he did it well.

"I'm very excited. He will have a trial at Warrnambool next week and run on the Thursday of the Warrnambool carnival next month."

The Nemesis is a former New Zealander who has won his only jumps start, a 2400m hurdle at Te Rapa last September.
