Santa Ana Lane has unleashed a powerful finishing sprint to chase down stablemate Mr Sneaky and give trainer Anthony Freedman a one-two finish in the Group One Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes.

Mr Sneaky ($8) hit the front under Brenton Avdulla approaching the 200m in Sunday's 1400m-handicap and burst clear only for Santa Ana Lane ($26) to emerge from the chasing pack and storm past him over the final stages to win by three-quarters of a length.

So Si Bon ($26), who like the first two placegetters had the limit weight of 52kg, was another 1-1/4 lengths away third.

"It's a great thrill and credit to the team," Freedman said.

Freedman had been training in partnership with his brother Lee, a Hall of Fame trainer, for the past couple of seasons until Lee moved to take up training in Singapore last month.

It was Anthony Freedman's biggest win since being back out on his own.

"With Lee going, I lost a few horses because of that," he said.

"I accept that, so these days and results like that put your name back up there."

Freedman said the race came into focus for five-year-old Santa Ana Lane after what he considered to be a luckless fourth in a Listed race at Moonee Valley the start before.

"His form the past six months has been really solid and reliable and consistent," he said.

"He was always one of those horses that if he got into one of these races and everything went his way, which it did, then he could win.

"And today was his day."

Freedman admitted his eyes were focused on Mr Sneaky coming into the business end of the race before the stablemate charged home with jockey Dean Yendall aboard.

"Those yellow and blue colours (of Santa Ana Lane), you can lose them quite easily," he said.

"I did focus on the other horse because I knew he had had a beautiful run throughout and once he popped off turning from home, the others were going to have to really produce something to beat him.

"Fortunately it was the other one."

Santa Ana Lane's victory was a third Group One success in the past 12 months for Yendall who snared his first elite-level victory aboard Yankee Rose in last year's Spring Champion Stakes.
