Darley two-year-old Safeguard will be out to salvage something from the Sydney autumn carnival when he makes a belated return at Randwick against a boom colt who also missed the Golden Slipper.
Paul Snowden, who had Safeguard in Melbourne for the early part of his career, warned not to underestimate the colt on Saturday when he lines up against impressive debut winner Il Cavallo in the Kindergarten Stakes.
The Peter Moody-trained Il Cavallo has been installed $1.95 favourite on the strength on his track-record debut win over 900m at Sandown, with Safeguard at $2.80.
Il Cavallo was second emergency for last week's Golden Slipper and didn't get a run.
A temperature spike for Safeguard after he ran in a barrier trial in late February forced trainer Peter Snowden to abandon an attempt to qualify him for the Slipper.
He instead turned his attention to Saturday's Group Three race.
"He is a talented horse. The draw is a bit sticky but I wouldn't doubt his ability," Snowden said.
"He's got more than enough to be competitive.
"I know there's a spruik on Moody's horse. He won well and has drawn barrier one which is a perfect gate for a Melbourne horse going to Sydney, so he's got a lot in his favour. But Safeguard has got good ability."
Safeguard impressed with a debut win at Flemington in December before it was decided to spell him and aim him at the Sydney autumn.
"We had an unfortunate thing with the temperature after he trialled," Snowden said.
"He might have landed in the Slipper, we don't know. We just had to pick up the pieces and go again."
