As a colt, Toydini was a handful. As a gelding he is a Classic contender and ready to live up to the promise he showed trainer Guy Walter early in his career.
Saturday's Australian Derby has come around too soon for Toydini but a good performance in the Group Three Carbine Club Stakes will cement a Queensland campaign.
"He used to beat himself," Walter said.
"He was also getting very top heavy so he was gelded and you saw last time what he could do."
At his second run from a spell, Toydini unleashed a powerful sprint to finish over the top of his rivals, putting a decisive 2-1/4 lengths on Ninth Legion in the Group Two Phar Lap Stakes.
He is the early favourite for the Carbine Club (1600m) ahead of the only filly in the field, Flying Snitzel.
"He does have an awkward gate on Saturday but I think he can overcome it," Walter said.
"The Queensland Derby is what he is being aimed at."
Toydini showed enough last season to earn his way to Brisbane for the Group Two Sires' Produce Stakes and the Group One TJ Smith as a late two-year-old.
He ran fourth in both races which were won by Sizzling.
His six spring starts produced a couple of placings but his pre-race manners made it obvious what had to happen if he was to fulfil his potential.
"We felt as a colt he wasn't showing his best," Walter said.
"I think now he can."
