For the first time this autumn, Charlie Boy has drawn the barrier to give him every chance to show his best.
Whether that will be good enough to beat Overreach in Saturday's Group One Sires' Produce Stakes remains to be seen but trainer Gerald Ryan expects him to be competitive.
Charlie Boy finished eighth in the Golden Slipper won by the Gai Waterhouse-trained filly who is at $1.55 to claim the second leg of the two-year-old triple crown.
The colt started from gate 12 of 16 in the Slipper, eight of 10 when fourth in the Todman Stakes and eight of 12 in the Silver Slipper in which he finished third.
"He's drawn a barrier for a change which makes a difference," Ryan said.
"He feels good and has done well since the Slipper so I have no concerns about backing him up."
Charlie Boy is a $15 chance in the Sires' Produce after attracting early support and Ryan has no concerns about him stepping up from 1200 to 1400 metres.
"They all have to do it," he said.
There were 13 acceptances for the Sires' Produce with Slipper fourth placegetter Guelph the second pick at $11.
Guelph was one of the leading fancies for the Blue Diamond Stakes in February but felt the hard track and finished ninth behind Miracles Of Life.
Trainer Peter Snowden gave her a break and was encouraged to continue her campaign after her fourth in the Slipper.
Overreach's stablemate Florid Affair, winner of a midweek race at Warwick Farm last week, is also at $11 and one-time Slipper favourite Villa Verde at $13.
Trainer Shaun Dwyer made the decision to run Villa Verde in the Sires' after assessing how well she had come through the Slipper in which she finished one place in front of Charlie Boy after jumping from gate 15.
