Foxplay favourite for Tristarc Stakes

Friday 20 October 2017, 6:29pm

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy will reunite with Group One winner Foxplay in the Tristarc Stakes for which the mare is favourite to snare her first win this spring.

Foxplay is one of three runners for premier Sydney trainer Chris Waller in Saturday's Group Two 1400m-race for mares at Caulfield along with French Emotion and Shillelagh.

McEvoy has ridden Foxplay three times for a Group One win in the Queen Of The Turf Stakes and a Group Two win in the Phar Lap Stakes last season.

They also combined for a close second to Foxplay's stablemate, champion Winx, in the Group Two Warwick Stakes in August.

Foxplay has finished third in the George Main Stakes and fourth in the Epsom Handicap ahead of Saturday's Tristarc.

"She's drawn a good gate (4) and it looks a nice race for her," McEvoy said.

"She has run well in her three runs back.

"She's got the penalty to carry but that's because she's a Group One winner.

"I'm sure the Myer Classic is going to be her main target but Saturday is a nice stepping stone towards that."

Foxplay, the $4.60 favourite, has equal topweight of 58.5kg in the set weights and penalties event along with fellow Group One winners Global Glamour and Silent Sedition.

Waller said the widest barrier was against Foxplay in the Epsom Handicap (1600m) when she settled last in the field of 10 before running home for fourth.

He said Foxplay had settled in well in Melbourne and rated her the pick of his three runners in the race.

"Coming back to 1400 metres is probably a slight negative but she's a pretty good horse," he said.

French Emotion and Shillelagh have both drawn wide in 15 and 13 respectively.

French Emotion finished midfield in the Blazer Stakes first-up while Shillelagh was held up at a crucial stage when unplaced in her return in Sydney.
