Craig Williams to ride Wall Of Fire in Cup

Wednesday 25 October 2017, 6:40am

Craig Williams has confirmed he will ride English horse Wall Of Fire in his bid for an elusive Melbourne Cup win.

Williams made his decision after partnering Wall Of Fire in a gallop at the Werribee quarantine centre on Tuesday.

The Hugo Palmer-trained stayer ran second to Lord Fandango in the Herbert Power Stakes at Caulfield last Saturday week in which subsequent Caulfield Cup winner Boom Time was fourth.

Williams missed the winning ride on Dunaden in the 2011 Cup through suspension and his original mount this year, imported Japanese horse Admire Deus, suffered a serious leg injury at trackwork last week.

The Palmer-trained Mask Of Time, fourth in the Toorak Handicap, threw a scare into the camp when he appeared to be lame after a gallop at Werribee on Tuesday.

Scans showed no damage and Palmer said he would continue with his campaign but no decision had been made on where or when he would run.
