Zabeelionaire makes return at Caulfield

Tuesday 16 April 2013, 5:28pm

Leon Corstens takes Derby winner Zabeelionaire back to the races at Caulfield on Saturday and the trainer's next classic hopeful is set to join him.

Last year's South Australian Derby winner Zabeelionaire resumes in the Listed Anniversary Vase (1400m) while lightly-raced three-year-old Sweet As Bro is entered for his first city test in an 1800m race against his own age.

Zabeelionaire is being readied for a Queensland winter campaign aimed at the Group One Doomben Cup while Corstens wants to give Sweet As Bro his chance to earn a shot at the Queensland Derby.

Four-year-old Zabeelionaire hasn't raced since finishing among the tail-enders in the Melbourne Cup in November.

Corstens is delighted with the way he has returned but the 1400m is short of his best distance.

"I'm pleased with him but I don't think the 1400 metres will be far enough," Corstens said.

"I reckon he looks great and he's working extra well, so we'll keep our fingers crossed and hope he puts in a good showing."

Corstens said Zabeelionaire, who will be partnered by Michael Walker on Saturday, would progress to the Hollindale Stakes at the Gold Coast second-up before the Doomben Cup.

Zabeelionaire's best spring efforts were a sixth in the Caulfield Cup and fifth in the Mackinnon Stakes but by the time the Melbourne Cup came around Corstens believes the horse had probably had enough.

"This is his time," Corstens said.

"He's had enough time to mature and there's no excuses. He's got to produce."

Sweet As Bro, a son of High Chaparral, won by seven lengths at Kyneton recently over 1459m in a restricted-58 event at his second start.

Corstens said he was "a little bit excited" about the gelding.

The number of acceptances for the 1800m 3YO Handicap will determine whether Sweet As Bro gains a start.

"I've done a bit of work with him, I think he's fit enough and I hope he's good enough," Corstens said.

"He looks promising so we'll just wait and see.

"What I'd like to do is hopefully get to the Queensland Derby. He's got to keep improving a bit all the time."

Zabeelionaire is set to carry top weight of 59.5kg in the Anniversary Vase with trainer David Payne saying Centennial Park would not make the trip from Sydney to run with 60kg.
