Jim Byrne cleared of ankle break

Wednesday 29 November 2017, 10:17am

Top Brisbane jockey Jim Byrne is expected to be fit to ride at Doomben after missing the Gold Coast meeting because of an ankle injury.

Byrne was taken to hospital for X-rays after a horse whirled around and dumped him on the way to the barriers at jump-outs on Tuesday.

The X-rays confirmed there was no fracture in Byrne's left ankle but it was badly sprained.

His manager Cameron Partington said the swelling had gone down overnight but Byrne would miss the Gold Coast on Wednesday as a precaution.

"Jim will probably also miss Friday at Ipswich but we expect he will be right by Saturday," Partington said.

"He is a tough customer."

Byrne will have a full book of rides on Saturday including Group One winner Capital Gain who resumes in the Winning Rupert Plate.
