Spirit Of Boom Colt Flies On Debut

Monday 4 December 2017, 9:05am

Few missed the trial of the David Atkins-trained Jonker on the Beaumont track back on November 21, so it was no surprise that he was sent off an odds-on favourite at his career debut in Sunday's Max Lees Classic (900m) at Newcastle.

Jockey Aaron Bullock urged the son of Spirit Of Boom from the barriers and took up the running.

Blessed with a smooth economical action, Jonker increased his lead at every call and needed little more than a couple of reminders from Bullock to win by three lengths.

The Peter Robl-trained Alison Tuffy (Manhattan Rain) was second, a half-neck ahead of Paquirri (I Am Invincible) in third.

"He's run time and did a bit of work. The way he raced 1200 metres looks ideal for him," Atkins told Sky Thoroughbred Central.

"He's got a good turn of foot and he'll go to the Magic Millions if he's good enough."

Bred by Wicklow Lodge, Jonker was a $45,000 purchase by part-owner Doug Crich from the Fig Tree Thoroughbreds draft at session two of the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

He is the third foal of the winning Kempinsky mare Hearts And Arrows who is a half-sister to the Group III CS Hayes winner Fair Trade (Danewin) from the incomparable Eight Carat family.

Jonker becomes the third winner from the first crop by Eureka Thoroughbreds Spirit Of Boom who has 10 lots on offer at the Magic Millions and seven at the Inglis Classic.
