Katy's Daughter earns Magic Millions berth

Saturday 23 December 2017, 3:16pm

It would be apt if promising filly Katy's Daughter gave trainer Steve O'Dea his first win in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic.

O'Dea already had Singular Sensation qualified for the big race on January 13 and Katy's Daughter's Gold Coast win came as no surprise to the Eagle Farm trainer.

Katy's Daughter ($6), who had been unlucky at her first when second at Doomben, stormed home to beat the favourite Paquirri ($2.70) by a head in the Aquis Ladies Day Handicap (900m).

The heavily backed Boom Girl ($5) was a similar margin back in third.

The win lifted Katy's Daughter, who cost $10,000 at the Millions sales, to $60,200 in prize money and safely into the Magic Millions Classic field.

Katy's Daughter is by Group One-winning sire Epaulette out of the prolific win-producing mare Kiss Me Katy.

Kiss Me Katy helped O'Dea make a name for himself in metropolitan racing when he arrived in Brisbane from Townsville in 2009.

She was his first Brisbane winner and his first stakes winner when she won the Listed Sir Douglas Wadley Stakes at Eagle Farm.

Kiss Me Katy also gave O'Dea his first taste of an interstate runner when she ran third in the San Domenico Stakes in Sydney.

As a broodmare she has also been great producer for O'Dea's as he has trained her offspring, Katy's Son, The Last Kiss and Dream Kisses, and they have all won.

O'Dea said it always gave him a thrill to win with off spring of Kiss Me Katy.

"I think Katy's Daughter is the best of the four that I have trained. She is going to relish 1200 metres and maybe a little bit further," O'Dea said.

"She is off to the Magic Millions now and I am sure she will do us proud," he said.
