Addison out to back up Caulfield success

Thursday 4 January 2018, 5:32pm

Lightly raced Addison is slowly building her racing career.

Now a four-year-old, Addison has has four starts, registering three wins, and is already with her third trainer.

She started out with Darren Weir, but after running last in a barrier trial at Stawell in July 2016, was transferred to Patrick Payne.

She won two starts at Stawell and Benalla for Payne before being transferred to Lindsay Park.

After a luckless first-up 10th at Bendigo over 1300m, Addison stepped up to 1700m to win on Boxing Day.

Addison rises from benchmark 70 grade to an 1800m-benchmark 78 race on Sunday and co-trainer Tom Dabernig believes she will relish the distance.

"She got there in the last hop and I think the 1800 metres will be ideal under the similar conditions," Dabernig said.

"And she looks to have improved fitness-wise.

"Peter Mahar owns her and we've trained for him over the years and I think he thought she might be suited by the farm.

"She's trained up there and enjoying it."

Fresh from a treble at Sandown on Wednesday plus an early winner with an expensive two-year-old at Geelong on Thursday, Dabernig is confident the stable can keep their winning run going.

He expects shock first-up winner Murphy's Reward to run well in the Jodie Taylor Handicap (1100m).

Murphy's Reward went around at $51 when successful at Moonee Valley over 1000m on December 23.

"We raced him off one trial," Dabernig said.

"We usually give them two but thought being a sprint we'd give him the one and race him into fitness.

"We used to do that a lot in the old days and he got under our guard a bit but he had been working well and he did trial very well."

Poor barrier draws have already resulted in Lindsay Park scratching American Genius and Royalic from Sunday's meeting.
