Big push for George Patton in Carrington

Thursday 25 January 2018, 2:21pm

Globe trotter George Patton has had an abbreviated racing career through injury and travel but that has not deterred punters who have made him favourite to win his first Australian start.

Now trained by Peter and Paul Snowden, George Patton began his career in France with Jean-Claude Rouget and was sent to Hong Kong with five starts under his belt including two wins.

He didn't get to race in Hong Kong because of various problems most recently a stress fracture to his right leg.

Based on a recent barrier trial when he finished second to Egyptian Symbol, George Patton has been backed from $4.60 to $3.20 favouritism for Saturday's Listed Carrington Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill.

His nearest market rival is last-start Randwick winner Lanciato at $3.60, a personal favourite for his trainer Mark Newnham.

Lanciato was the first runner Newnham saddled in his own right 18 months ago after he took out his own licence following a long association with Gai Waterhouse.

"He likes having his runs spaced and the three weeks since his last run is enough to keep him fresh," Newnham said.

"The distance is also to his liking. Fourteen hundred metres to a mile is ideal for him and Rachel King rode him well last time so she gets on again.

"He is a favourite in the stable and is going as well now has he ever has.

Lanciatio has established a pattern of getting back and taking one run at the pack.

"That's how he races best," Newnham said.

The Chris Waller-trained Endless Drama has also attracted support ahead of his return from a leg injury and was the TAB's third elect at $4.80 on Thursday.

He underwent an operation last year to repair a fracture to his right hind hock and has proved his fitness with three recent barrier trials.

Trainer Kris Lees is looking forward to Prized Icon having his first start for the stable but keeping a lid on his expectations.

The 2016 Victoria Derby winner was transferred to Lees when his former trainer James Cummings moved to Godolphin last year.

"Prized Icon has been in work quite a while, and given a good grounding," Lees said.

"He has had two solid trials, but there's no substitute for race fitness.

"I think he'll run a nice race, but he's never been successful first-up and I'm not going into the Carrington with any great expectations."

Prized Icon has top weight of 60kg while George Patton and Lanciato are both on the 53kg limit.
