O'Dea chasing consolation for syndicate

Friday 26 January 2018, 1:39pm

Trainer Steve O'Dea has retired top-class mare Candika but has a chance to get some consolation for the Proven Thoroughbreds syndicate on Saturday.

Candika won five of her 19 starts and earned $449,000 prize money and her five placings included a third to Capitalist in the 2016 Magic Millions 2YO Classic.

The four-year-old mare was injured when a long last in the Magic Millions Fillies and Mares race two weeks ago.

"Unfortunately, Candika sustained a fractured carpal bone and has been retired," O'Dea said.

He will saddle Sir Moments in the Sunshine Coast Cup (1400m) and Choreograph and Francisca in the Three-Year-Old (1600m) at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday.

All three are owned by Jamie Walter's Proven Thoroughbred syndicates who have won dozens of races with O'Dea.

Sir Moments won the Cup last year but O'Dea believes he will need luck from a wide barrier.

O'Dea believes Choreograph and Francisca will both be suited getting out to 1600m.
