David Hayes hopes his decision to miss the Sires' Produce Stakes with Fast `N' Rocking can reap a Group One reward on Saturday and set the colt up to be a star of the spring.
Still a maiden after six starts, Fast `N' Rocking has turned in eye-catching performances in two of the biggest juvenile races of the season.
He was second in the Blue Diamond and fifth in the Golden Slipper, convincing Hayes to set his sights on Saturday's Group One Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Randwick.
The top trainer is comfortable with his decision to bypass the Sires' Produce Stakes a week after the Slipper and wait for the Champagne.
"From a three-year-old point of view, I didn't want him having three runs in a month and then expect him to come back and be a superstar," Hayes said.
"I think he could have done it, but I don't think it would have been a benefit for his three-year-old career. And he's a horse crying out to be three.
"I want to give him as easy a time as possible at two, but try to win a Group One."
Fast `N' Rocking will be spelled after the Champagne.
"He'll be put aside as the (Caulfield) Guineas favourite, hopefully," Hayes said.
Fast `N' Rocking has continued to please Hayes since the Golden Slipper and the Hall of Fame trainer believes the colt can give favourite Guelph, an impressive winner of the Sires' Produce last start, a run for her money.
Hayes rates Criterion and Guelph as the dangers in the Champagne.
"Fast `N' Rocking's form is around her (Guelph)," Hayes said.
"He beat her home in the Diamond and she just beat him home in the Slipper but he came from last and was finishing over her. I would say we'll give her a real race."
Fast `N' Rocking has yet to race beyond 1200m but Hayes says the Champagne will be his first chance to compete at his "true distance".
Guelph is the $2.60 favourite with TAB fixed odds ahead of Criterion at $5 and Fast `N' Rocking at $6.
