Pre Stwick scratching sours Japanese raid

Saturday 14 April 2018, 4:47pm

The Silk Racing Club's first foray to Australian racing has ended in disappointment after Japanese stayer Pre Stwick was scratched at the barriers before the Sydney Cup.

Trainer Yoshinori Muto and members of the club were reduced to mystified observers at Randwick as Who Shot Thebarman produced a stirring finish to claim the Group One staying test.

Pre Stwick was withdrawn on vets advice after Hong Kong-based jockey Joao Moreira was unhappy with the seven-year-old's action.

A second vet examined the gelding and agree with the initial finding.

Silk Racing president Masahi Yonemoto had discussions with Moreira before issuing a statement through an interpreter.

"We heard after cantering the horse to the gate the jockey requested a trot up for the vets and the decision to scratch was made.

"It is understood it may have something to do with the front left leg.

"It's a mystery because everything upon arrival during our time in quarantine has been very smooth and we've had no issues. It's quite a surprise."

Despite the setback, Yonemoto said the Silk Racing Club was positive about returning.

"The Sydney carnival has been a wonderful experience for us and we'd love to take the challenge and visit again. It's a fantastic racetrack and lovely atmosphere."
