Time ran out for Darren Weir to have Prince Of Penzance ready for Saturday's South Australian Derby and the trainer is hoping the emerging stayer can post a Flemington win instead.
The lightly-raced Prince Of Penzance was a fast-finishing second to Hunger over 1800m at Caulfield last start and is favourite to go one better in Saturday's Flemington Green Fields Handicap (2000m).
He is one of six horses in the race entered for next month's Queensland Derby with Weir to assess his prospects after Saturday.
"He's a nice staying horse on the way up and he's in good order," Weir said.
"I expect him to run well."
Prince Of Penzance wasn't among South Australian Derby (2500m) nominations as Weir said the timeframe wasn't going to work out to get the gelding to Saturday's Group One at Morphettville.
"He just wasn't quite ready. He would have needed to have this run before it," Weir said.
"We were just a fortnight behind where we needed to be."
Stablemate Gingerboy is an outsider in the South Australian Derby.
Prince Of Penzance has won at Stawell and Ballarat in his first four starts and is chasing a first city victory with the step up to 2000m expected to suit.
If he performs well, Weir will think about a Brisbane trip.
"We just put him in just in case. We'll see what happens and take one run at a time," he said.
Stakes winner Walk With Attitude has a big weight to contend with in the Go Green Handicap (1200m) but her 60kg will be offset by the 2kg claim for apprentice Jake Duffy.
A Listed winner at Flemington last spring, Walk With Attitude was doing her best work late when fourth to Flamberge first-up three weeks ago and Weir is eyeing a return to stakes grade with her in Adelaide depending on Saturday's result.
"I thought her run was terrific first-up and she's come on a bit," the trainer said.
"I'm hoping she will also run well."
