Exciting Murty ready for Caulfield debut

Thursday 26 April 2018, 5:31pm

Trainer Greg Eurell is looking forward to seeing Flying Murty make his city debut at Caulfield.

The four-year-old lines up in Saturday's Next Payments Handicap having had three career starts, registering two victories and a second, all at Pakenham.

Flying Murty has been installed the $4.40 favourite for Saturday's race despite giving away experience to his rivals.

"I think it's a good opportunity to see what he can do," Eurell said.

"We didn't have many options but I was certainly hoping a race in town did come up for him.

"He seems worthy of having a crack at them and I think he's up to it."

A rising five-year-old, Flying Murty had a delayed start to his racing career after running through a fence as a young horse.

Eurell said the long time recuperating from the injury allowed the gelding time to mature.

"He cut a hind leg right in the crease of a hock that took forever to heal," Eurell said.

"It was was a really big wound.

"Initially it started to close up quickly but then it stopped and took months to heal properly.

"It hasn't hurt him so in hindsight it might have been beneficial and to his credit he's a well-mannered horse and a pleasure to deal with.

"Whilst he was getting the leg treated he was in the stable getting handled all the time and I think all that has helped."

Eurell says Flying Murty recovers quickly from his races which allows him to concentrate on planning his next race.

Where Flying Murty heads after Saturday, Eurell will decide after watching his performance.

"It's a big step to stakes class but he's certainly up to city grade," Eurell said.

"The horse is probably a miler the way he races so I hope we get that opportunity to step him up to 1600 metres soon.

"Maybe he could be a Winter Championship type of horse."
