Top stayers to miss Doomben Cup

Sunday 29 April 2018, 4:45pm

Queensland's chances of ending a 35-year drought in the Group One Doomben Cup seem remote as two of the state's best distance horses, Rudy and Honey Toast, missing from the nominations.

Entries close for the Brisbane winter carnival Group One races on Tuesday morning while nominations for Saturday's Group Two Hollindale Cup close on Monday.

A Queensland-trained horse hasn't won the Doomben Cup since Deagon trained Lord Seaman took it in 1983.

Trainer Helen Page has confirmed million dollar earner Rudy, who ran third in the Doomben Cup last year, has been retired although he has been featured in some betting markets.

"The horse is sound but the owners decided it was time to retire him. Rudy has been terrific for us and it is time to reflect on his achievements," Page said.

Rudy's last start was an unplaced effort in the Toowoomba Cup on April 7.

Rudy won more than $1,037,000 with his best wins the 2014 Group Two Villiers Stakes and the 2017 Tattersall's Cup.

Trainer Ben Currie has eased Honey Toast after his fighting second in the Toowoomba Cup.

"I thought he wasn't at his best after the run and decided to give him a short let up," Currie said.

"I hope he will be back for races like the Ipswich Cup and Caloundra Cup late in the carnival."

Toowoomba Cup winner Morendi, who is trained by Darryl McCabe in northern NSW, is yet to be confirmed as a Doomben Cup runner.
