Stewards charge Egan over Mornington ride

Tuesday 1 May 2018, 4:38pm

Jockey Billy Egan faces a hearing before the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board after being charged for his handling of Zizzis at Mornington.

Trained by Patrick Payne, Zizzis came from the tail of the field to finish second in a 1000m-race for two-year-olds on April 16.

Egan was charged under an Australian rule of racing that states the rider of every horse shall take all reasonable and permissible measures throughout the race to ensure that his horse is given full opportunity to win or obtain the best possible place in the field.

Racing Victoria stewards allege that after beginning with the field, Egan failed to make a sufficient attempt to maintain a position with the bulk of the field, when he had the opportunity to do so, and ultimately settled several lengths behind the second-last runner.

They say that between the 600m until approaching the 400m he failed to take sufficient measures to improve the position of the filly from the rear.

From between the 400m until the 250m, stewards allege he failed to ride Zizzis with sufficient vigour when he had the opportunity to do so.

Sent off the $2.20 favourite following her win in the Magic Millions Classic at Morphettville at her previous run, Zizzis finished second to Daskarzine, beaten 1-1/4 lengths.

A date for the hearing has yet to be set.
