A Sweet first for Bryan Guy at Toowoomba

Wednesday 2 May 2018, 3:18pm

Trainer Bryan Guy confirmed his theory that it is never too late to have a first in racing when Sweet Adaline won at Toowoomba.

A multiple Group One-winning trainer who won the Brisbane trainers' premiership in 2006-07, Guy had never won a race at Toowoomba.

"I moved up from Rosehill to train at the Gold Coast 20 years ago and I have had about 700 winners since but none up here," Guy said.

"In fact I haven't been to Toowoomba in eight years. The boys were joking I might have got lost."

Sweet Adaline ($4.40) made it two wins in a row when she beat Brains ($3.80) by a head.

"She was originally trained by Chris Waller in Sydney and Basil Nolan bought her at a broodmare sale," Guy said.

"She is by Lonhro and has already been second in three Saturday-class races. Today was a metropolitan standard race and we will chase more city wins in a Class 3 Plate in two weeks."

Trainer Tony Gollan had the second placegetters in the first two races but got his 100th overall winner for the season when Red Phantom ($1.80) scored as favourite over 2000m.

"I have had something like 120 seconds for the season and a lot of them by small margins but that's the way it goes," he said.

Red Phantom is entered for the Group One Queensland Derby on June 9 and Gollan isn't sure which path to take.

"We can go to the Rough Habit Plate or the other option is a midweek race over 2200 metres and then the Grand Prix Stakes," he said.

Gollan got a double and jockey Jim Byrne a treble when Unlikely Story ($1.80) won a maiden (1100m).

"He had about two years off because as a two year old we were getting him ready for the Karaka Millions in New Zealand but he did a sesamoid bone and needed plenty of time and rehab," Gollan said.

"I am sure he can be a Saturday horse later this winter."
