Ben Currie calls on El-issa for Ruettiger

Thursday 3 May 2018, 1:09pm

Trainer Ben Currie has called on in-form jockey Bobby El-issa to help turn around the form of stake-winning sprinter Ruettiger in the Gold Coast Cup.

Currie has been in outstanding form and had four winners at Toowoomba on Wednesday to take his overall season total to 125.

It places him sixth on the Australian trainers' premiership and he is fourth on the Queensland metropolitan premiership with 41 winners, one behind joint second-placed Toby Edmonds and Robert Heathcote with Tony Gollan on 67.

Currie has a light representation at the Gold Coast but hopes Ruettiger can improve in the Gold Coast Cup.

Formerly with Lee and Anthony Freedman and then Lindsay Park before joining Currie last year, Ruettiger has failed at both his starts since a spell with the latest a 10th at Doomben on a heavy track.

"The wet track didn't suit him last time and he has won at the distance," Currie said.

El-Issa won the Listed Weetwood Handicap on the Currie-trained Amanaat last month and has ridden winners at the past two Queensland metropolitan Saturday meetings.
