Ben Currie fined over trackwork

Friday 4 May 2018, 2:04pm

Trainer Ben Currie has been fined $3000 for working some of his horses at the Toowoomba track on Good Friday.

Queensland Racing Integrity Commission stewards opened an inquiry after conducting interviews with several people about Currie working horses on the track when it was closed on March 30.

At a resumed inquiry Currie was charged under a racing rule which covers a trainer who fails or refuses to comply with an order, direction or requirement of stewards or an official.

Stewards alleged there was a safety issue because with the track closed there were no track staff to supervise work.

Currie pleaded not guilty but stewards found against him and fined him $3000.

He has until next Thursday to seek an internal review.

Currie is currently the leading Queensland trainer on winners with 126 and is fourth on the metropolitan premiership.
