Malibu Style accustomed to Melbourne life

Saturday 5 May 2018, 3:23pm

Perth trained sprinter Malibu Style is getting used to life in Melbourne.

In the past 13 months, the Neville Parnham-trained sprinter has raced 12 times on Melbourne's tracks with a return trip to Perth for two outings during the summer carnival.

Malibu Style landed his second Melbourne win in that period, taking out Saturday's Living Legend TJ "Tommy" Hughes Handicap at Flemington.

Ridden by former Perth apprentice Fred Kersley, Malibu Style, the $2.50 favourite, beat Proud Wolf ($12) by half a length, with Lady Esprit ($6.50) a short half-head away third.

"Last year he was here for about 10 months and performed pretty well," Parnham's foreman Mark Sestich said.

"We took him home for the Winterbottom but he didn't perform well after a torrid run.

"The idea was to only bring him over for a couple of runs and then send him over to David Hayes as that's where we've been staying.

"But after his second run he trod on a nail with a back foot so I had to back off him for four or five weeks and Neville said you might as well give him another run.

"He ran a bottler last time in the Bel Esprit Stakes and he improved off that and I thought he'd win today."

Sestich said he expected to stay in Melbourne for the gelding's next start in the Listed The Straight Six at Flemington on May 19.

"It's no good turning him out now but eventually he'll stay here with David," Sestich said.
