Vega shows his Magic in Werribee jump-out

Monday 7 May 2018, 4:02pm

Vega Magic has shown he is on target for his defence of the Group One Goodwood with an easy win in a jump-out at Werribee.

The Lindsay Park-trained sprinter cruised home under Goodwood rider Damien Oliver in the 1100m jump-out on Monday, delighting senior trainer David Hayes.

Vega Magic won the Goodwood first-up at Morphettville last year at his first start for the stable and will again be attempting to win the race fresh on May 19.

The gelding suffered a cut to a leg in a paddock accident late last year which put an autumn campaign on hold.

Vega Magic won a trial at Tatura last month and has since trained on well.

"Ollie said he has made really nice improvement from Tatura to here and found the bends here much easier to handle than Tatura," Hayes told broadcaster racing.com.

"He's one for one at Morphettville and I think he's the only horse to win the Goodwood first-up, so hopefully he's the second horse to win it first-up.

"We were tempted to get him ready for Sydney, but it was a little rushed so we decided to go the tried and proven way of what we did last year with him and head towards the Goodwood."

Hayes said Vega Magic was likely to have only one run and then prepare for the $13 million The Everest at Randwick in October, a race he ran second in last year.

He said the gelding was likely to try for a repeat of his Memsie Stakes win at Caulfield last year before a freshen-up leading into The Everest.
