Toryjoy keeps Flying Spur flame flickering

Wednesday 9 May 2018, 2:43pm

The legacy left by champion sire Flying Spur promises to be a long-lasting one, judging by the win of Toryjoy at Warwick Farm.

Flying Spur, the broodmare sire of Toryjoy, died on Tuesday night at Arrowfield Stud, the famous thoroughbred nursery near Scone where he was raised before reaching the top as a racehorse and later as a stallion.

As well as being a sire of sires, Flying Spur also left his mark on his female offspring.

Broodmares sired by Flying Spur are the dams of 76 stakes winners, including the 2008 Golden Slipper hero Sebring.

Flying Spur was also a Golden Slipper winner, beating Octagonal in a memorable finish to the 1995 edition.

He won twice more at Group One level before retirement as a three-year-old not long after the 1996 autumn carnival in Sydney.

Appropriately, Toryjoy opened her account at her third attempt in a race named for Flying Spur's son - the Casino Prince@Vinery Handicap.

Sent out favourite at $2.50, Toryjoy pipped Monsieur Sisu ($17) to win by a short head.

"Hopefully she can step up from this and get through to a little more exciting company than the maiden grade," trainer Chris Waller's racing manager Charlie Duckworth said.
