Prominent racing identity Don Storey dies

Wednesday 16 May 2018, 9:49am

Long-time owner, breeder and racing administrator Don Storey has died aged 86.

Storey served on the Sydney Turf Club committee from 1970 until 2001 including a lengthy period as vice-chairman.

He was also well-known as a thoroughbred owner for almost 50 years, most recently with Rain Affair, a four-time Group One placegetter who won nine races in a row on Sydney tracks in his black and gold quarters.

Storey was also the owner of two Golden Slipper placegetters, Been There who finished second to Sir Dapper in 1983 and Boasting third to Marauding in 1987.

His colours were most recently seen winning at Hawkesbury last week with the Chris Waller-trained Blazeray.

Australian Turf Club chairman Laurie Macri said Storey, along with his late wife Val, was a regular and popular part of Sydney and Australian racing for many decades.

"Don held a great passion for racing as an administrator, owner and breeder but most of all was a wonderful husband to Val and a gentleman to all who knew him,'' Macri said.

"He served on the STC committee during some of the most successful and innovative times in the history of Sydney racing.

"We thank and pay tribute to Don and will always remember his wonderful contribution to thoroughbred racing.''

The ATC will name a race in Storey's honour at a forthcoming meeting.
