Andrew Johns asked to front racing inquiry

Monday 6 May 2013, 12:04am

Ex-footballer Andrew Johns and two other racing identities will be given one more chance to attend the More Joyous inquiry or face sanctions by racing authorities.

Johns, former jockey Allan Robinson and punter Eddie Hayson have been named as pivotal players in the inquiry which centres on whether there was a problem with the John Singleton-owned race mare More Joyous before she finished second last in the All Aged Stakes on April 27 at Randwick won by All Too Hard.

"There are a lot of links in the chain and it's disappointing Andrew Johns doesn't come and have his evidence tested," chief steward Ray Murrihy said.

Singleton publicly sacked Gai Waterhouse as his trainer after the race, saying her bookmaker son Tom Waterhouse had told people the mare could not win.

Johns was later named as one of two people who had spoken to Singleton on race day with Robinson the other.

The footballer tendered a statement to the inquiry as did Robinson but their phone records, obtained via the Telecommunications Act, did not tally with the calls they said they made.

Robinson called Singleton on race day and said the footballer had told him the horse could not win.

After his name was brought up, Johns visited Singleton at his Central Coast home, and expressed fears he would be sacked by the Nine Network as "collateral damage".

"He said, 'mate, I'll be collateral damage' and left me with that very negative image," Singleton told the inquiry."

"He came to my home to apologise for everything he had said."

Johns allegedly believed he would be fired instead of Waterhouse, who spent millions of dollars to be the network's sports wagering partner.

"He admitted he'd probably embellished, and he felt he let Tom down, let me down and let (trainer) Gai (Waterhouse) down," Singleton said.

"He said he used the word `off' in regards to More Joyous but that is a word he commonly uses."

In his statement, Johns admitted to a conversation with Tom Waterhouse at a football match on the Thursday before the race where the bookmaker told him he didn't like It's A Dundeel, All Too Hard and More Joyous at the meeting.

Robinson's statement said he had one conversation with Johns and then went fishing but his phone records show numerous calls between himself, Johns and Hayson.

Tom Waterhouse's betting ledger showed he had backed More Joyous and that All Too Hard was a losing result for him.

Gai Waterhouse has denied there was a problem with More Joyous apart from some heat in her neck which was treated with an antibiotic, something she did not consider serious enough to tell stewards.

More Joyous was inspected by Singleton's vet John Peatfield on race morning and he declared her fit to race.

Gai Waterhouse's anger at Singleton spilled over in the inquiry where she accused him of being drunk on the day.

"He used profanities and swore at me," she said.

Singleton said he had three beers during the afternoon.

The inquiry has been adjourned to give Johns, Robinson and Hayson another chance to appear.

Failure to do so could result in the trio being warned off racecourses.
