Queensland Derby hopes on show at Coast

Trainer Chris Munce's confidence in three-year-old Lucky Jackson measuring up as a Derby horse was confirmed at the Sunshine Coast.

The Caloundra meeting had two races over 2200m and several trainers used them as lead-ups to possible Queensland Derby and Queensland Oaks starts.

The races produced two impressive winners in Lucky Jackson and Evolo ($3.20).

Lucky Jackson's all-the-way win boosted his prizemoney to $39,700 which should be enough to get him into the Queensland Derby over 2200m at Doomben on June 9.

"I have been saying for a while this bloke is a genuine stayer and I thought enough of him to take him to Sydney last campaign," Munce said.

"He got to roll along today on a big track which suited him.

"I will put blinkers on him and probably start him in the Grand Prix (on May 26) as a lead-up."

Evolo lifted his prizemoney to $33,300 and at this stage is on the fringe of getting a Derby start.

Trainer Toby Edmonds is keen to run Evolo in the Derby but won't rush the gelding who was having only his fourth start.

"I obviously have an opinion of him and he is a promising stayer," Edmonds said.

"If he comes up from this run we will head to the Grand Prix and then maybe the Derby."

Evolo is owned by New Zealander Rob McAnulty who raced some top horses in the 1980-1990s including the Group One winner St Covet.

Trainer David Vandyke continued his run of luck with horses named Constant Flight when the gelding won a Class 3 over 1200m.

"My family raced the original Constant Flight, then I later trained a stakes-winning mare named Constant Flight," Vandyke said.

"I waited until the name was available again and called this promising horse Constant Flight."
