Savatiano romps home in Randwick victory

Saturday 26 May 2018, 1:44pm

Godolphin filly Savatiano might be set for a stakes race after her dominant win at Randwick.

James Cummings has adopted a cautious approach with the three-year-old but the manner of victory in the McCarthy Homes Handicap (1200m) suggests a black-type race could be on the agenda.

After Zonk' blew the start, Savatiano's jockey Josh Parr took the initiative and the $2.50 favourite adapted perfectly to hit the line 4-3/4 lengths clear of Savvan ($8).

Sasso Corbaro ($3.60) was a neck third.

"Zonk missing the start forced my hand to go forward and lead but I was quite happy to do so. She travelled like the winner a long way from home," Parr said.

Godolphin assistant trainer Darren Beadman said Cummings could now raise the bar for Savatiano.

"She made it look very easy. It was a toss up whether James takes her to a black-type race," he said.

"He's been placing her very well and having a win like this gives a filly like her a lot of confidence. She showed that bit of class she's got.

"Hopefully there could be a nice little stakes race in place for her somewhere down the track for her."
