Trainer Mick Price knows he won't easily replace his Blue Diamond-winning filly Samaready, but he is grateful for the compensation her half-sister provided at Sandown on Wednesday.
Samaready missed most of last spring and all of the autumn through illness and injury, leaving a large gap in the Price team.
But the win of Samarmeteors in the Queen of the Turf High Tea Handicap (1000m) provided a welcome break for the trainer.
Samarmeteors and Samaready are out of the Secret Savings mare Samar, but according to Price and jockey Craig Newitt there aren't many other similarities.
"This filly was a very backward yearling and we've taken a fair bit of time with her," Price said.
"She's got ability though, all we have to do is get her a bit of black type."
As much as he appreciated the win, Newitt said Samaready had been in a different league to her half-sister.
"She was a ready-made package," Newitt said.
"She won the Blue Diamond and was pretty unlucky to run third in the Golden Slipper.
"This one's pretty handy and will improve, but that's about it at this stage."
Having only her second start, Samarmeteors ($4.40) showed high speed from her outside gate to lead clearly maintaining her advantage until inside the 100m when she was headed by Romancing The Stone who seemed set to land a plunge.
But Newitt got to work and his filly responded well, scoring by 1-1/4 lengths with Romancing The Stone holding second by a half length from Menage A Charge.
