Epidemic shares in feature race limelight

Saturday 2 June 2018, 5:47pm

Impending is a tough act to follow but his youngster sister Epidemic has grabbed her own slice of the limelight on the Sunshine Coast.

Epidemic enhanced her value as a future broodmare on Saturday by winning the Listed Helen Coughlan Stakes (1200m) by a short-head from Pomelo ($11), who made a valiant bid for an all-the-way victory.

Just Dreaming ($7) was a half-neck away third in an eye-catching trial for the Group One Tatt's Tiara (1350m) at Doomben on June 23.

Epidemic boasts the bloodlines worthy of a black-type winner.

She is by champion racehorse and sire Lonhro from Mnemosyne, a dual Group One winner of the Thousand Guineas and Queen Of The Turf Stakes.

Epidemic's brother Impending will attempt to continue the family tradition of winning feature races when he makes his swan song in next Saturday's Group One Stradbroke Handicap at Doomben before embarking on a stud career.

"She's done a good job in her own right and the more Impending keeps winning the more value it creates for her," Godolphin assistant trainer Paul Reid said.

"It was a good, tough win. She's quite a determined little filly and even though it got a little bit tight during the race, she really knuckled down and had a go."

Reid gave Impending a glowing report as he prepares for back-to-back Stradbroke wins.

"He came through the run in the Kingsford-Smith great and all things being equal he should run very well," he said.

"I know there's a big weight turnaround in comparison to some of his rivals but we couldn't be happier with him."

Epidemic is jockey Larry Cassidy's first winner for the Godolphin racing operation.
