Impending set for back-to-back Stradbrokes

Sunday 3 June 2018, 2:05pm

Stud-bound Impending's good recent form on his least favourite wet tracks has the powerful Godolphin stable confident he can become the eighth horse to win back-to-back Stradbroke Handicaps.

Impending, who won last year's Stradbroke as a three-year-old, has top weight of 57.5kg in the big race this year.

He is set to stand at Darley's Northwood Stud in Victoria next season and has already been advertised on its stallion roster.

Godolphin trainer James Cummings is growing in confidence Impending can go to stud with three Group One wins after he won his second in the Kingsford Smith Cup on May 26.

"Impending has pulled up really well after winning the Group One Kingsford Smith Cup in very exciting fashion," Cummings said.

"The horse was just full of speed and in the perfect frame of mind for the race, and I think he really demonstrated his wonderful turn of foot to burst through that narrow gap and create his own luck to win what was a high quality event."

Cummings said the win had been a mark of Impending's consistency.

"His form this whole preparation has really been building up to that sort of performance, not forgetting it was on un-preferred wet ground. That's a really good reflection on how good of form the colt is in.

"We are really over the moon with how well the horse has been performing and how well he has been able to show himself before he goes to stud at the end of this campaign."

Impending's influence on the Godolphin operation was again shown when his full sister Epidemic won at Caloundra on Saturday to pick up valuable black-type in the Helen Coughlan Stakes.
