Englebrecht hoping luck holds for Derby

Running last in a Randwick barrier trial isn't normally much of a recommendation for a winter carnival campaign.

But trainer Steve Englebrecht always sensed Lucky Lucky Lucky had the potential to develop into a promising stayer.

"He didn't have a clue at his first trial," Englebrecht said.

"He completely lost the plot that day but he just didn't know what he was supposed to do."

Englebrecht persevered and after the gelding defeated older rivals at Goulburn in January, he decided to target the Brisbane carnival on the recommendation of winning jockey Peter Robl.

"He was getting lost on the smaller tracks like Canterbury and Warwick Farm but winning on the bigger track at Goulburn was the turning point," he said.

"Peter said he'd be an ideal type for Brisbane after a bit of a break."

Lucky Lucky Lucky opened his Brisbane campaign with a second to Proverb in the Gunsynd Classic at Doomben and will line-up in Saturday's Rough Habit Plate (2100m) at Doomben with Larry Cassidy aboard.

"The bigger track at Eagle Farm will suit him a lot better than Doomben and the 2100 metres is more his go than the mile," Englebrecht said.

"I was hoping for a better barrier than 16 because I wanted him to race a bit closer but we might have to go back again."

While Englebrecht expects Lucky Lucky Lucky to be highly competitive in the Rough Habit, he is preparing the gelding to peak in the Group One Queensland Derby (2400m) at Eagle Farm on June 8.

"The trip away has done him the world of good because he could get a little bit hot under the collar but we've got his head right," he said.

Lucky Lucky Lucky is Englebrecht's first starter in Queensland since Genius And Evil ran fifth in the 2004 TJ Smith at Eagle Farm.

Genius And Evil was then sold to Hong Kong where he was re-named Absolute Champion and won three Group One races including the 2006 International Sprint when he thrashed Silent Witness by more than four lengths clocking 1:07.80.
