Young guns Spirit Of Boom and Zoustar will resume their battle for the honour of being named Australia's champion first-season sire in the Group One J J Atkins Plate at Doomben.

Eureka Stud's Spirit Of Boom will have two runners in Saturday's J J Atkins (1600m), Plumaro and Boomsara, while Widden Stud's Zoustar will be represented by Zousain and Lean Mean Machine.

Eureka Stud master Scott McAlpine said win, lose or draw on Saturday, Spirit of Boom had done a wonderful job in his first season.

"I don't think we can catch Zoustar on prize money earned but we are certainly going after him with stakes wins and winners," McAlpine said.'

"Spirit of Boom has had a Queensland record for a first season sire of 16 individual winners but I think he will have a few more before the end of the season," McAlpine said.

"He has seven stakes horses, winners or placegetters, and to win a Group One would be the icing on the cake.

"He had three horses in the Magic Millions and then to have two in the Atkins is an outstanding effort for a Queensland first season sire."

McAlpine got some good news from the trainers of Plumaro and Boomsara this week.

Kevin Kemp has booked Sydney jockey Tim Clark for Plumaro who was unlucky in the BRC Sires" Produce Stakes two weeks ago.

"She was severely checked when a horse broke down and to finish about three lengths from them was a great effort," Kemp said.

"Plumaro gets to 1600 metres on Saturday and that is what we have been waiting for."

Chris Munce said Boomsara had done well since dead-heating for third in the Sires.

"The barrier isn't too bad and he will run well," Munce said.

Zousain and Lean Mean Machine and another runner from the Chris Waller stable, The Autumn Sun, dominate Atkins betting.
