Magical return for Joe Pride sprinter

Saturday 9 June 2018, 1:23pm

Sprinter Brook Magic has by broken new ground at Randwick and strengthened her bid for a black-type campaign in Melbourne.

Ideally placed by trainer Joe Pride on Saturday, the lightly raced Hinchinbrook three-year-old produced a dogged run on her comeback to claim the #theraces Handicap (1100m).

Her first win beyond 1000m sets her up nicely for a return to Listed or Group company during winter, where the rain-affected ground plays in her favour.

Pride claimed 2kg by booking in-form apprentice Jean Van Overmeire and the tactic panned out perfectly as Brook Magic ($3.90) rallied to resist late surges by runner-up She Knows ($4.40) and $3.30 favourite Revenire, who was a half-neck in third.

Van Overmeire trialled Brook Magic on Monday and was impressed after she scored by a long head.

"At the hundred she put her head down and kicked into another gear to get her head back in front. It was a very tough performance," he said.

"The ground was in her favour and the sections we had early probably got her across the line."

Pride took Brook Magic to Caulfield last August for the Group Three Quezette Stakes (1100m) and indicated before Saturday's race he was open to sending her south again provided she proved herself over that distance.
